Last Friday a disturbing image spread across the television screens of millions as a ballerina and a 14-year-old boy were shot and killed on live television. As viewers were enjoying a ballet show, an abrupt news bulletin appeared on their screens. “Harrison Bergeron, age fourteen, has just escaped from prison, where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government” a ballerina explained to the viewers. What happened in the following few minutes was difficult for some people to watch.
Harrison Bergeron was only fourteen years old when he was taken from his family home and thrown in prison. He was arrested on suspicion for plotting to revolt against the federal government, which is a life sentence in federal prison. He was classified as a genius and was forced to wear specially designed handicaps, that were never seen before being used by Harrison. The young man was legally forced to wear:
· Large Headphones
· Spectacles with thick lenses
· Scrap Metal
· Red Rubber Ball on nose
· Shaved Eyebrows
· Black Caps over some teeth
During the news announcement, a sudden screech came from the television set. The image on the screen shook and jumped, only to reveal a real, breathing Harrison Bergeron. The whole set screamed and so did everyone watching from home. The dangerous teenage criminal had escaped the federal county prison and headed straight to a television broadcast. Many wondered why he would do such a thing, but his intentions became clear in a few moments.
Harrison rushed in front of the camera holding the door knob he had ripped off of the entrance. Everyone in the studio fell to their knees, nobody expected to survive his fury. What he yelled next sent chills down the spines of everyone witnessing this horror scene. "I am the Emperor!" He exclaimed that he was now in charge and that everyone must follow his orders. He swiftly tore his handicaps off his body like they were pieces of cloth. He smashed his glasses and headphones against the wall. No one could believe what they were witnessing, a truly supernatural force.
The young man struck fear in all those around him. He was now in charge, and he was aware of it. The "Emperor" explained that the first woman brave enough to rise before him would become his "Empress" and rule along side him. Most people would be terrified to stand during such a horrifying scene, for good reason. It was clear that nobody dared to stand up, until, one ballerina gracefully arose from her knees. She stood before Harrison, she wore a mask and physical handicaps around her body. Harrison removed the handicaps, followed by the mask. The ballerina was extremely beautiful.
The "Emperor" ordered the musicians to play their best music as he placed his hands on the girls tiny waist. They begun to dance, gently and gracefully. The scene shocked all those who were watching, nobody believed their eyes. For a moment, some believed that Harrison might actually become the next in power, and could possibly change the way society works. The couple danced hand-in-hand for many minutes, everyone around was afraid to move. This gracious scene was soon interrupted by the sound of another person stomping into the studio.
As the new "Emperor" and "Empress" continued to dance, the handicapper general, Diana Moon Glampers angrily entered the studio. In her hands, a double-gauge shot-gun. She loaded the weapon and proceeded to fire two rounds at the dancing couple. Before anyone knew, the two of them were on the floor dead.
The handicapper general then proceeded to reload the gun and threaten the musicians to reattach their handicaps before she killed them as well. They of course did as she said, it was then that the viewers knew, society would remain the same and Harrison Bergeron was dead.
The ballerina's mask and Harrison's glasses were recovered at the scene, covered in blood. The actions of Diana Moon Glampers caused a great cost of life, but many believe it was for the best that the dangerous teenage criminal is no longer a danger to the public. While, others believe there could've been a safer way to handle the situation. The ballerina that was killed was later identified as Amanda Satori, she was an incredible dancer and a beautiful woman. She was brave enough to face Harrison in his moment of fury, but she died because of her actions.
The handicapper general has since released a statement about the events that took place Friday evening. "We want the public to know that the handicap regulations will stay in place as they are, and that they have no reason to be afraid." The actions of Glampers are currently being investigated by the federal government. No other government officials have commented on this situation.
This situation was tragic and difficult to watch. Though Harrison refused to wear his handicaps, it is still necessary that every individual wears their handicaps and that they follow the laws as they did before. The government released a new, smaller design of the audio handicap, called "EP18" and it is currently being sold for $35.99. During her statement about the events that happened with Harrison Bergeron, Diana reminded the public that the consequences for disobeying handicap laws will result in fines, prison and even execution.
Harrison Bergeron was used as a clear example of someone who disobeyed the laws and the government and had to pay the price for it.
As I write about this situation, I just want to remind everyone that though we may not always agree with the laws we must follow, they are there for a reason and they must be obeyed. I learned a lot from this event and from Harrison. He was just a boy, and he was still incredibly feared by so many. Though he was a criminal, he had much life ahead of him and it saddens me that he could not continue his journey. I believe the same for the beautiful ballerina that died that night as well.
